Line-breeding does have its problems, however, because to produce a fixed strain of what is not a very prominent characteristic in the wild fish, the fish showing the most potential to carry that characteristic are mated, but they are often related. The problem with mating related fish is that genetic diversity is lost, and defects are consequently common in the descendants. Therefore, fish that look very different from the original wild type are often much weaker and less hardy, and may be associated with various physical defects. These can be visible on the fish, such as a deformed spine, bent head, strangely shaped mouth or a shortened body. But several invisible weaknesses may also be present, including sterility and a reduced resistance to disease.

If you are breeding fish at home, make sure that you purchase parent fish from different sources and thus different blood lines. This will go some way to ensure that healthy offspring are subsequently produced.
